Chennai to Pondicherry: A Motorcycle Tour of Southern India

During a once in a lifetime trip to Southern India, we had the chance to capture some sights and sounds while we made our way from Chennai to Pondicherry on motorbikes. The trip was overwhelming and a truly eye opening experience. We at VBF knew that it would be very difficult to re-create on film the actual experience of being in India on the streets with thousands of cars, tuk-tuk's, cows, goats, and dogs. The visuals, sounds, and smells all created a sensory overload situation that can only be experienced by being there, but hopefully this film gives you a sense of what it was like to be immersed in the surroundings and experience the amazing places along the coast of Southern India.

Festival of Thump

A thumper is a motorcycle with a four stroke, single cylinder engine. It is called a thumper for the sound it makes. It goes thump, thump, thump. We like them because they’re lightweight, torque-y, easy to maintain, and make that sweet sound. Thump, thump, thump. There’s a whole community of folks who like them, a whole world actually.

Putting on our first proper motorcycle show at the Emporium of Postmodern Activities, we were a bit nervous. Would there be enough people? Would there be enough bikes? We weren’t too sure. So when our first thumper enthusiast arrived at 10 am, telling us he had just jumped a flight from Seattle expressly for our event, there was a feeling of “oh shit this better be good” combined with “oh shit this is so good ALREADY.”

Then the bikes started coming. Specimens from around the globe—England, Italy, Japan, Germany, Austria, India, America—found their way into our parking lot, and were each given their own personal red carpet moment to crank over their engines and apply some throttle. Then more bikes showed up. Gerry Hickman, who raced the Isle of Man in ‘47, ‘48, and ’52 brought his factory works Norton Manx, taking home the prize for Best Factory Racer. Then even more bikes arrived. Best custom build went to Orsi Villacorte, Ana Lorrente took home the prize for Best Factory Original with her cherry Norton, and the award for Unbridled Enthusiasm went to Bixby Moto. The bikes were insane. The camaraderie was strong. The thumpers had their day. Apologies go out to our neighbors for the noise.

The Persuaders!

SIGN PAINTERS (OFFICIAL TRAILER)

This the official trailer for SIGN PAINTERS a documentary by Faythe Levine & Sam Macon. For information regarding screenings, and other news please visit www.signpaintermovie.com

About the project...

There was a time, as recently as the 1980s, when storefronts, murals, banners, barn signs, billboards, and even street signs were all hand-lettered with brush and paint. But, like many skilled trades, the sign industry has been overrun by the techno-fueled promise of quicker and cheaper. The resulting proliferation of computer-designed, die-cut vinyl lettering and inkjet printers has ushered a creeping sameness into our landscape. Fortunately, there is a growing trend to seek out traditional sign painters and a renaissance in the trade.

In 2010 Directors Faythe Levine and Sam Macon, with Cinematographer Travis Auclair, began documenting these dedicated practitioners, their time-honored methods, and their appreciation for quality and craftsmanship. Sign Painters, the first anecdotal history of the craft, features the stories of more than two dozen sign painters working in cities throughout the United States. The documentary and book profiles sign painters young and old, from the new vanguard working solo to collaborative shops such as San Francisco’s New Bohemia Signs and New York’s Colossal Media’s Sky High Murals.

The book published by Princeton Architectural Press in November 2012 features a foreword by legendary artist (and former sign painter) Ed Ruscha. We encourage you to pick up a copy at your local book shop, or directly from Princeton Architectural Press - http://goo.gl/aTZLq
